Behind-the-Wheel training must be taught, in-person, by a qualified CDL holder who meets the minimum amount of experience:

  • Holds a CDL of the same (or higher) class and with all endorsements necessary to operate the CMV for which training is to be provided and has at least 2 years of experience driving a CMV requiring a CDL of the same or higher class and/or the same endorsement and meets all applicable State qualification requirements for CMV instructors; or

  • Holds a CDL of the same (or higher) class and with all endorsements necessary to operate the CMV for which training is to be provided and has at least 2 years of experience as a BTW CMV instructor and meets all applicable State qualification requirements for CMV instructors.

As a training provider, you will play an essential role in ensuring that entry level drivers are equipped with the knowledge to safely operate commercial motor vehicles, for which a commercial learner’s permit (CLP) or commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required.

This training course will serve as an orientation for the Behind-the-Wheel portion of the FMCSA’s ELDT program. Here, we will introduce you to the commercial motor vehicle driver training curriculum as well as the use of the FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry (TPR) website.

Training Objectives:

By the end of this training course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the FMCSA’s ELDT mandate and its requirements
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities that ELDT training providers have in the CDL process
  • Recognize the importance of the self-certification process for training providers
  • Understand the ELDT Behind-the-Wheel curriculum
  • Successfully navigate and use the Training Provider Registry website to input, search, and edit driver training information
